Everyone's Best Friend (Dogmeat and Companion At Same Time - No Console - No Hack)

Everyone's Best Friend is a simple ESP that modifies the game's companion system to allow Dogmeat to accompany you alongside any other human companion (e.g., Piper, Nick Valentine, or Codsworth) without using console commands or the 'Companion Infinitude' mod. It works by changing the quest flag that normally forces Dogmeat to leave when you pick up another companion, and it also adds a dialogue option to dismiss Dogmeat separately. Players install it to keep the Lone Wanderer perk (which works with Dogmeat) while also having a second companion for combat support and carrying capacity, effectively giving you a 2-person squad without breaking the game's balance too much.

🎯 Tips & Tricks

Recruit Dogmeat and another companion in the correct order to avoid bugs

First, go to the Red Rocket and recruit Dogmeat (talk to him and say 'Let's go'). Then, travel to Diamond City and recruit Piper (or any other companion) by completing their personal quest. The mod will automatically add a 'Dismiss Dogmeat' option to his dialogue. If you recruit the human companion first, you must dismiss them, then recruit Dogmeat, then re-recruit the human — otherwise the mod's scripts may not trigger properly. Save before attempting this.

Use the 'Lone Wanderer' perk with this mod for a massive damage bonus

The 'Lone Wanderer' perk (Charisma 3) normally deactivates when you have a companion, but it ALSO deactivates with Dogmeat. This mod does NOT change that. However, if you take the 'Attack Dog' perk (which only works with Dogmeat) and the 'Lone Wanderer' perk, the game's code will still give you the damage reduction and carry weight bonus from Lone Wanderer as long as Dogmeat is your ONLY companion. So, recruit Dogmeat, DO NOT recruit a human companion, and you'll get the perk benefits plus Dogmeat's help — this is the intended 'no hack' way to have a buddy without losing the perk.

Force Dogmeat to stay while using 'Vault-Tec Workshop' DLC's 'Vault-Tec Population Management System'

If you use the Vault-Tec terminal to assign Dogmeat to a settlement, he will automatically leave your side. To prevent this, open the console with '~' and click on Dogmeat, then type 'setplayerteammate 1'. This overrides the assignment. Do this AFTER using the terminal. Also, avoid using the 'Companion Tracker' in the DLC — it will teleport Dogmeat away from you.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Conflict with 'Amazing Follower Tweaks' (AFT) or 'Companion Management Mod' (CMM) causing companions to not follow Dogmeat or to duplicate.

AFT and CMM both override the companion system's underlying quests (especially 'CompanionQuest'). Load 'Everyone'sBestFriend.esp' AFTER AFT and CMM in your load order. In Vortex, set a 'Load After' rule. If you still get duplicates, open the console, type 'resetquest CompanionQuest', then 'setstage CompanionQuest 10'. This resets the companion system. Do NOT use AFT's 'Force Recruit' on Dogmeat while this mod is active — it will cause a soft-lock.

Dogmeat disappears after fast traveling or entering a building, but the human companion stays.

This is caused by the mod's 'Follow Distance' setting conflicting with 'Sim Settlements 2' or 'Workshop Framework' that change follower AI. In the mod's INI file (found in Data/EBF.ini), set 'fFollowDistance=100' and 'bUseFastTravelFollow=1'. If that doesn't work, open the console, click on Dogmeat, and type 'setav aggression 0' to reset his AI package. Also, ensure you have the latest version of 'Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch' — it fixes a pathing bug that causes Dogmeat to get stuck in elevators.
